Understanding Your CP240 Notice

If you've received notice CP240 that means there's a disagreement between the information you reported on your employment tax return and figures submitted to the IRS  from your W-2, W-2G, and 1099R forms.

What to do:

  1. Open the enveloped and read your notice carefully to understand why the IRS says you owe additional tax on your earnings. Keep it in a safe place and don't lose it.
  2. Check your tax filings to see if you agree with the changes suggested by the IRS. Do you owe additional tax on your earnings?
  3. Make note of the payment due date on the notice’s payment coupon.
  4. If you agree, and can pay the tax, then use the coupon and send in your payment to the address provided within 30 days from the date of your notice.
